To celebrate Peanut Butter Lovers’ Month, Southern Peanut Growers offers
three peanut butter dishes for less than $1-2 per serving
CANTON, GA – November 8, 2011 – With food prices on the rise, Southern Peanut Growers (SPG) is reminding consumers this Peanut Butter Lovers’ Month that U.S.-grown peanut butter is still one of the most affordable, nutritious and versatile protein sources around.
“At less than 20 cents per serving and shelf-stable for up to two years, protein-packed peanut butter is unbeatable when it comes to value, versatility and nutrition,” says Leslie Wagner, executive director of SPG. One 2-tablespoon serving of peanut butter provides 8 grams of protein.
A mainstay ingredient, peanut butter is present in about 90 percent of U.S. households and valued globally not only for its nutrition and convenience, but for its popular flavor.
Thrifty cooks craving economical meals and full flavor can enjoy the following three recipes, each ringing up for less than $2 per serving:
- Peanut Butter Breakfast Bread Pudding – $0.88 per serving
- Southern Peanut Soup – about $1 per serving
- Edamame Dumplings with Thai Peanut Sauce for $1.93 per serving. Recipe from Robin Asbell, author of Big Vegan: More Than 350 Recipes – No Meat, No Dairy, All Delicious (Chronicle Books, 2011).
According to Asbell, peanut butter’s rich, nutty flavor profile and texture lend themselves perfectly to savory and sweet treats alike, from African stews and Thai dipping sauces, to breakfast smoothies and sweet desserts.
“Everyone loves peanut butter, and it’s a great way to add budget-friendly proteins to every part of the menu,” she says.
